I will still be maintaining this blog as a repository of reviews - pruning spam comments and the like - and may update it when I feel like I've grown the way that I want to. Until then, though, I'm done playing. Thanks to everyone who was and still is interested in reading these longform reviews; it's been a dazzling journey so far and I feel bad leaving so many cool sights still unseen. I'm just ready for a long, healthy detour.
Since id Software released Doom in 1993, thousands of user-made WADS and maps have been and continue to be created for the Doom community's entertainment.
These are their stories.

The Future of ONEMANDOOM
It's been more than another month since my last post so I ought to make a salient update that I've been putting off. Everything is going fine but at this point in my life, writing about the works of the Doom community isn't satisfying to me as a creative outlet. I'm not making WADs because chance and circumstance brought me back to my love of crafting stories and the sorts of thing that I would like to do cannot be accomplished within the admittedly flexible confines of the Doom engine.

Thank you for your work; you're still leaving us with a huge repository of recommendations!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog that I enjoy so much. Thank you for bring us a good reading material about master pieces from the Doom community. I wish everything goes well.
ReplyDeleteAtte: The BFG9K oh yes!
Thanks kmx, you've done incredible work for the community. I've gotten a lot of inspiration from this blog, both in terms of WAD recommendations and also analysis of what makes maps work (or not). Hope you get the urge to come back one of these days, but only when it feels right for you again. -- Big Ol' Billy
ReplyDeleteThese reviews have been wonderful reads, and though I'm sad to see you go, I know how burnout is. Don't make yourself do what you don't enjoy, and I wish you the absoloute best in whatever you go on to do. And if you choose to not write here again, just know that you left us with a very big backlog to read through!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the interesting reads and the fun reccomendations. This site was one of the things that really got me into a game made years before I was born.

Thank you for your work! Sad to see you go. I enjoyed reading most of your reviews, especially the reviews of the most popular wads! Some of the wads I played thanks to your reviews and I have actually started playing a few wads last week, while also reading the reviews of said wads. I will be missing this blog. Take care and wish you all the best!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I was also born after the original Doom came out. Still, I always enjoyed playing Doom ever since I was 3-4 years old back in 1999 or so when I played the shareware versions of Doom (1.2 and 1.666 on some shareware games CDs) and the pirated 1.666 version of Doom 2 (which was included on a CD with other games like Heretic and Hexen). Never thought Doom would become so popular and so modded until in 2007 when I discovered the source ports and modding community. And here we are today, still playing Doom after all these years!

Thanks for your work, still use your blog searching for recommendations on what to play next, hope you still make some reviews every now and then to keep it alive.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the years of plugging away at the mountain of user-created WAD's. And the best of luck in your future endeavours!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna miss reading your reviews. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI feared it would come to this... That you would call it a day before having reviewed Eviternity first... Damn! I was really hoping for that one. Your body of work would have felt much more complete that way. Maybe that's why you left it out...
ReplyDeleteBut seriously. Thanks for all the great work you've done. No better site on the web for DOOM wad reviews. Thoroughly enjoy reading these reviews. Still many i haven't read since i'm still pretty new to DOOM wads. I'll keep coming back to this site in future for guidance on my way through the vast, sprawling megapolis of the DOOM community's boundless creativity. I wish you good luck on your new voyages. Take care.

Thanks for all your hard work man. This blog has been a great resource over the years! Lots of WADs I wouldn't have found without it.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the great effort you have made and the passion you have shown.
ReplyDeleteI understand the fact that you have decided to take a break, after all, the work you have done is not only massive, but impressive. I mean, with over 800+ reviews, you have left a great legacy.
Anyway all I want to say is: Thank you for everything you've done KMX. Your writing has always been a great pleasure to pour over, as well as an incredible resource to the community. I wish you the best in your future endeavors!
ReplyDeleteI am a silent reader since many years on your site. Your service will be missed comrade. See you in hell to beat demon a****. Take care and best always.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you've figured out how to manage the blog for the foreseeable future. Much as I've come to appreciate the huge amount of WAD/mod coverage you've accomplished, it matters more that you can safely say "this is it" and move on.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your excellent analyses, map descriptions, and insight on the Doom custom scene's earlier years. I struggle to find a better critical resource for many of these releases, and I hope everything here's getting thoroughly archived. The reviews and retrospectives here have not only introduced me to many a wonderful fraggin', but also many influences for my own maps.
Hope you revisit this project at some point in the future! It's gotten me interested in doing a Doom crit series building on ONEMANDOOM's strengths.
One of the reasons i enjoyed this blog is your ability to pick out and enjoy the subtle details in the many wads you've covered. Many have regarded you as one of the nicest reviewers out there. This doesn't come from sugar-coated reviews, but rather a clearly passionate writer seeing and enjoying what less passionate and knowledgeable reviewers would miss. Your willingness to uncover lost gems of times past and to do slow-burns (playing several authors' entire wadography, for example!) just to gain further understanding of a mapset's context is what elevates you above others. All guided gently by a simple yet thoughtful and vivid writing style. Your blog has been an inspiration for me in more ways than Doom. Take care kmx, and thank you for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteThank you for doing these reviews, and leaving them up as a reference. They have long been my favorites in the DOOM reviews sphere -- it's especially fun to read about maps I'm familiar with, as another perspective (and perhaps a new way of replaying those maps).
ReplyDeleteI will gratefully remain subbed via RSS.
I havent checked in for a long while, but feeling bored I found myself rushing back thinking "Oh crap, I hope this still exists!", and while I am of course sad to see that the project will be on a hiatus (possibly forever), I am extremely grateful if you continue to maintain this website, even if I had read the majority of your reviews etc (Im far from having done so >w<), it is still an awesome thing to have, and to get a fun little read over dinner or coffee every now and then!
ReplyDeleteLike previous commenters, I am an infrequent reader and occasional commenter, so I missed this update until now and just had to leave a comment. I've been playing WADs on and off for several years now and your blog has been one of my main resources in that time. Frankly I haven't come close to exhausting what's already here. So thank you, and best wishes to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteHope you find the drive to return someday! Thanks for the reviews!
