400 Reviews and Happy Holidays

i let a few milestones glaze by, but as of Mayan Mishap, Doomed: Doom WAD Reviews is sitting pretty at 400 reviews and has been semi-active for almost four years. every year people make more stuff than i can play, and thats good. ive also been part of the cacoward team since 2012, a position i did not envision but have since kept up with... more or less. actually, 2014 has been my best year since 2011 since i kept up plenty of buffer reviews for irregular updates in case I got waylaid. the only really big addition to the blog has been the tumblr, which has been a neat experiment at delivering something more specific than my blog to a different audience. anyway, i could do some kind of cool retrospective or something but id rather solicit you guys for a roadmap for 2015. what super-obscure stuff would you like to see reviewed that isnt on the blog? what cacoward winners from 2010 and earlier are you dying to see words on?

    1. considering i have reviews for OG plutonia and plutonia revisited this is starting to look like a gaping hole, yeah

  3. Dark7 and its mission pack may be worth a review, too.

  4. Will you review Urotsuki series?

    ReplyDelete
  5. If I had to pick just one, it would be Ultimate Simplicity, but the Massmouth series would be awesome too.

  6. I'd recommend you to have a look at this obscure gem from 1997: Soldier of Fortune by Lisa Moore.

Also, I would like to see you review Scythe 1 and 2. Those are definitely worth looking at.

    1. yeah at this point im kind of embarrassed to not have the scythe series played

  7. I would pick Plutonia 2, Wonderful Doom and 2002: A Doom Odyssey. After that I suggest to start reviewing original IWADS as well, I just find it weird that the original levels weren't reviewed yet (except Final Doom and Master Levels).

    1. the main reason i have put off talking about Doom / Doom II is that its hard to gauge them having spent so much time playing them when i was a young lad

  8. I know I already commented, but if you're looking for things that weren't in the Cacowards, I've got a few more suggestions.

Dolphin's Dream, Unhinged, Castle of Eternal Carrot in the Sky, City of the Damned and CotD: Apocalypse are all great, and Virus Episode One is completely different and really cool.

Also, I know Super Sonic Doom was a runner-up in 2004, but I just started playing it and it's one of the coolest WADs I've ever played. Oniria 1 and 2 are also pretty awesome, the first was a runner-up in one of the Cacowards I know.

  10. Doom: The Golden Souls, fantastic TC that was completely ignored by this year's Cacowards.

    ReplyDelete
  11. UAC Ultra is up there with Darkening 2 and Suspended in Dusk as among my favourite mapsets for any game ever. I'd love to see your take on it.

I'd also like to see you go over the official releases, like Doom 1 and 2 and (especially) Doom 64. I'm curious as to how you'd cover them.

    1. doom 64 will be reviewed before i ever tackle the iwads

    2. oh yeah UAC Ultra is done, also check out me setting myself up for failure. Doom 64 before the IWADs my ass!

  12. I'd also like to thank you for the reading material, KMX--reminds me of the old Doom Underground format. Nearly everything that's on this site is something I've played before, and it's nice to have something like a sleek travelogue guide down memory lane, so to speak, especially as it will occasionally leave me hankering to revisit something from the past.

I do have a small handful of PWAD suggestions for you, take 'em or leave 'em.
First, a couple of interesting/quirky oldies for OG Doom: Castle Phobos (dmcpho.zip on the idgames archive) and Dark Hell (darkhell.zip), both of which ended up as full episodes after some fragmented early releases.
And some odds and ends for Doom II:
Unloved -- highly atmospheric semi-hub for G/ZDoom, surprisingly violent combat in places
Hellcore 2.0 -- compiles the crown jewel maps of the decidedly abortive Mordeth Award-winning megawad, plus a few additions. Also very heavily atmospheric with some quirky gameplay designs, almost reminds me of something the Russian community might make.
Claustrophobia: The Walls Close In -- More vintage ZDoom. Would suggest looking at this one at some point after Winter's Fury, I think there are some interesting historical parallels to be drawn.
Junko -- Fairly obscure ZDoom mapset. This is full-bore "Doom as an adventure game" stuff, something you seem to have a fondness for. I'd consider this one of the finer/deeper modern examples of the breed, myself, though of course it's the kind of thing that only has a rather niche appeal.

Whether you get to these or not, just so long as you keep doing what you do in some shape or form, that's what matters.

  15. First off, thank you for all the great work you have done! As for recommendations: How about some of ReX Claussen TCs? Paranoid and Darkest Hour (and standalone expansion/prequel) remain some of my favourites, and they did such a great job re-creating other FPS games in Doom. Also another vote for Unloved and City of the Damned 2. Unloved is basically Doom meets Hexen meets Silent Hill, not everyone's cup of tea but I am pretty sure you will enjoy it. City of the Damned: Apocalypse made me even more sad that we don't have source port for Blood. It's a real looker and also pretty adventurey and exploration-driven so I think you will like it.

I also look forward to you reviewing some hidden gems that are either undeservedly forgotten or flew under most doomers radars (like you did with stuff like System Vices or SPAWN, I ended up really enjoying them and I certainly would have never even heard of them without your reviews!)

  16. In addition to what you've listed above (especially Scythe 1/2/X, Unloved, Wonderful, and your Embarrassments list) I'd also love to see Caverns Of Darkness and Heretic: Sinful Discharge (supposedly Doomsday-only, but I've ran it just fine in GZDoom.) Maybe Heretic: Gulag as well.

What you said above about this blog being a trip down memory lane for a lot of us readers is totally true: I love going back over the screenshots/writeups and getting those flashes of "Oh yeah, *that* level!"

and if you want some more Heretic wads to review:

Solid old schoolish Heretic map, with a perfect level of detail and great looking texture combinations, apparently it's a remake of The Crypt from Heretic, but it stands on it's own and I only know it's a remake because I read the text. :P
    http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels%2Fheretic%2Fa-c%2Fcrypts.zip

Stunning Heretic masterpiece by Kaiser, huge, epic and expansive and fits the Heretic lore and universe like a glove: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/heretic/Ports/kaiser_21.zip

^ This level was later added into a Heretic compilation wad called Heretic Treasure Chest which has some gems in it, but also has many painful maps for me to really recommend it (e1m1 is probably my least favorite Heretic level of all time)... when I play this compilation I always skip to a level, so I can only say "play with caution". http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?file=levels/heretic/Ports/htchest.zip

The Experiment (te.wad, an obscure oldschool episode, noone ever talks about it. somewhat similar to mm.wad)

One Bloody Night (Erik Alm's earlier stuff)
e6y3 (another very creative level by the author of the best Doom port :-)
Escape From Phobos\Deimos\Natas trilogy (continues the events of Escape from New York :-)
hellrun.wad (both the E2 replacement and the Doom 2 map)
    Istanbul (Arabian/Greco-Roman style)

The first pwad I ever played was a megawad called Operation Biowar on Doom 95 (using TNT as the iwad of all things). It's still one of my faves for (mostly) nostalgic reasons. At the time it blew me away with its new music, sfx, and graphics. These days I know the sources of most the new content, but at the time it was the first time I had experienced it. Curious to see your take on it since you don't have nostalgia goggles, so uhh...mind putting Biowar on the backlog? =D

    Also:
    KingDime's Birthday Mapset
Nuclear Halls (it's by Capellan/Adam Windsor)
    Estranged (megawad by Foodles)
BTSXE1 Map19 (still missing that, and it has quite some differences from the rest of the episode too)
A bunch of birthday maps 40oz made circa 2010 or so
    Favillesco series (E1/E2/Alpha E1 and E2)

    1. Oh and how could I forget: Prime Directive!

      Delete
    2. 32in24-14: some authors did it better than others, but a few of the levels - MAP38 and MAP41 - are just Frankensteins of sewn together CTF layouts with perfunctory enemy placement. this doesn't describe every level that used portions of 32in24 levels, and it's really more a case of what authors were willing to do with the layouts than any problem with the layouts themselves, but having gone through MAP38 and MAP41 the idea has been just about spoiled for me.

      also

BTSXE1 MAP19 - no. i am not updating this until the final version comes out, which will also have a MAP32 from skillsaw. rolling between revs is not worth my time.

      Delete
    3. 32in24-14: and of course Map42 is awful. However - everything Map33 onwards is stuff that was deemed relatively 'bottom of the barrel' in the quality spectrum, especially compared to the main 32 level set. They were given little if any extra playtest/revision in comparison to the main wad. So they shouldn't really be held as a strike against the wad.

      Delete
    4. that's why i said "not sold on the ctf layouts" and not "this wad fucking blows". most of the authors didn't bother trying to build off a 32in24 map but of the ones that did TMD did a pretty good job at stitching stuff together. but in any case, you can read all about it when i post the review

      Delete
    5. I think in addition to TMD (Maps 15/18) Lupinx also did a fairly good single player version of his own previously-CTF map (for Map28). I would agree something like Map24 is perhaps weak though. As well as a handful of maps (in the main 32 I'm talking) that are simply not that great (in spite of being original designs).

    6. this discussion will fit better on the review page for 32in24-14 when it gets posted

    1. I'll add all of these, except for Suspended in Dusk, which is http://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2011/04/sidzip-suspended-in-dusk.html one of this blog's oldest reviews

  44. Plutonic Winds, a set of semi-speedmaps by darkreaver that got surprisingly little notice in 2013.

Anything hobomaster made (he's the author of Pinnacle of Darkness).

  45. Also moving to non-cacoward but 'top 100' years (in response to initial question - does not include wads already in some way in the list):

    2003:
    Void
Doom Raider: Crypt of the Vile

    2002:
    Ruma
    007: License to Spell Doom

    2001:
    Sin City (really, all three)
    Null Space
    Doom Resurrection

Not going to look over 2000 or prior for now.

And another addition: Threshold of Pain (actually the special edition), a PSX theme mod.

    1. Void has been reviewed for two years http://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2013/04/void-voidwad.html

      I'll add the rest, tho

  46. Monument.

There are only 1 or 2 brand new levels in the episode, and 3 of them compose basically an upgraded version of 2014's The Wailing Horde, but the rest have not been covered in any way on here yet (including the 'ready to post' section) & all previously existing maps are updated from their initial incarnations anyways.

  47. Sunlust (it's done, at last!) If you dread it just play HMP :)

  48. I'm usually very quiet about where my stuff goes, as I don't really care that much, but seriously Sunlust is way too important to just shove down to the bottom.

    1. well

first, even i forgot that sunlust was already on the list, sandwiched between "Ol' No Name" and "King Dime's Birthday Mapset". im still not going to organize it or anything.

second, these reccs were added to the list in the order they were received. anyone who has been watching this should know that i've been cherry-picking the shit out of it.

third, I don't want to regret soliciting recommendations and spending what little effort it takes to create the recc list. i appreciate that you are passionate about Sunlust, and i am excited to play it, but it doesn't matter whether it takes ten days, ten weeks, or ten months to do it.

  52. Brutal Doom / Project Brutality? They have their faults, but I would say they are pretty significant.

    1. there is no question as to its significance, but i am holding out for a moment of crowning stability. if i had reviewed the mod back in 2011, when it had already gone through a number of iterations, the review would barely reflect its current state, and i do not want to be distracted by a rather vocal subset of the community to update a detailed review with every subsequent iteration

  53. I'd recommend Death Tormention 3 very highly if you had any sort of enjoyment with the first two (which are already in the 'Ready To Publish' list).

  54. Monument (it's been released as final)

  55. Way Too Many Dead Guys - https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/71259-way-too-many-dead-guys-final-alpha/

This wad is finished but was never uploaded to /idgames so it's easy to miss when looking for stuff to review.

Also, Breach - https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/71430-breach-updated-to-beta3/ - another map that was not uploaded, but the current beta is all but a finished work and the author doesn't look likely to do any more with it. (Nothing from him on the thread for at least 8 months)

  56. Other single map wads (probably not as 'important' as Breach, though) - except the last, these aren't on /idgames:

-rdwpa's made a couple single maps besides just his speedmaps, look for threads he's started. Mucus Membrane, From Tears, and Dumplet primarily.

-Bradford Spencer (think it's the same guy from AV but not sure) released two maps earlier this year: Once Upon a Slime, and Alien Vendetta: Fate of the Drifter.

-Antaresia is a deathmatch wad but it's got a singleplayer bonus map in Map30 worth looking into.

  57. Struggle - https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/74791-struggle-version-beta-one-is-available/

Also pitching in Ol' No Name again - https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/73125-ol-no-name-4-map-set/ - another wad that never found its home on /idgames but is quite substantial regardless.

  58. Another one that sinks out of view due to no recent update and no idgames upload. Dolman made an episode sort of in the spirit to DTWID, Episode 1 earlier this year, certainly worth giving consideration:

    https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/71986-dtwid-my-version-of-episode-one-of-doom/

Ol' No Name and Monunent remain pretty important, just using any time I have something else to say as a chance to keep pitching that reminder in as well

  61. Also a few wads in beta or early release candidates, may or may not see final release in 2015:

Pcorf Community Project 2: 2048 Unleashed
Jiffy Bag (Various purpose maps by Jimmy)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Warlock's Hearth (Khorus map, and it's about as big as most full episode from him)
The Last Sanctuary (FDC 16 map, on /idgames already)
And - once again - Monument! Doomsday is only 3 and a half weeks away!

  63. Any chance of getting you to cover Impure Offering? https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/g-i/impoffer

It's a reasonably-short single level for prboom-plus -complevel 9. Has been known to not work in Zandronum, and is a bit finicky with compatibility settings, so sticking with prboom-plus is recommended.

    2. That's fine! It's already over a year old, so I'm not hoping to see it turn into an "instant smash success" or anything.

Plus, it took over six months to get a /newstuff review, so I'm used to waiting for a long time, heh.
