by my reckoning, this blog is now at 500 reviews and almost five years of uptime. gosh, that's a long time and a lot of words to be writing about a twenty-two year old computer game. so, here is the request list from last year, with the completed stuff removed. feel free to make requests, unless you are BDL, because seriously. anyway, here's to another wonderful year of Doom.

DeleteA review on tech gone bad would be pretty sweet, It would be like the ultimate doom reviews
ReplyDeleteits definitely on the short list
Deleteand DONE like months ago lol
DeleteThat's a lot of Doom. My head asplode.
ReplyDeleteyes. yes it is
Delete1 Monster
ReplyDeleteAction Doom
Action Doom 2
Deus Vult II
Hellcore
Equinox
32in24-15:Dwango Unchained
ReplyDeletei have never played multiplayer and do not intend to in the foreseeable future and wouldn't even know where to begin to give the multiplayer community the kind of reviews they deserve.
DeleteOkay my mistake lol.
Delete'scool
DeleteWould love to see your take on Hellfire series, especially Reborn and Dreams. Shadowman is godlike when he does that sort of atmospheric maps with semi-realistic environments. Review of "5 Years" would be nice, since maps from that one are pretty similar to Hellfire ones in style.
ReplyDeletei definitely do want to do a full overview of shadowman's work at some point. added
DeleteThe one omission that seems unusual for your site is the (mostly) wonderful Whispers of Satan by Paul Corfiatis and Kristian Aro. I find the mapset just a teeeensy bit inconsistent, but some of the maps they've included in there are some of my absolute favorite of any megawad. For example, Corfiatis' Vulcana (map 25) or Aro's Halls of Cocytus (27). I think when they finally get to the hell levels, they nail the aesthetic of being evil, epic in scope, and brooding without degenerating to traps that require constant BFG spam. My two cents.
ReplyDeleteit seems unusual at first but if you take a look at what I have reviewed thus far, i'm slowly building my way toward Whispers by playing through their entire back catalogue.
DeleteLots of quality Dooming to be had on that long, long list. You've certainly got your work cut out for you. Nevertheless, a handful of further suggestions:
ReplyDelete*Jade Earth - Gigantic and highly polished subterranean techbase map, by Jodwin.
*Sacrifice in Blood - Very large/heavily exploratory monastery-type map. Very pronounced slant towards 'survival horror' action, i.e. not necessarily having resources to kill everything active at any one given time.
*The Corrupt Priest - Funky void map, sequel to Sacrifice in Blood. Taking backlash against the ammo balance in the first map on board, this one is much more run/gun oriented, with piles of ammo and lots of killin.' The two make an interesting pair, I think.
Whatever you end up playing next, here's to another fine year!
thanks! added
Deletewhispers of satan. and a link to download it.
ReplyDeletewhispers of satan is already on this list, albeit under Tumblr Travails
DeleteI don't have wad requests as for now but would like to see Doom 2: Hell on Earth reviewed these days, since you reviewed Original Doom and Ultimate Doom. Anyway congratulations for 500 reviews!
ReplyDelete-FistMarine
Not trying to be rude or anything but you forgot to reply on my post. Once again congratulations for 500 reviews and can't wait for Doom 2 to be reviewed, as well as some popular megawads such as Plutonia 2, Scythe 2 and Wonderful Doom. :)
Delete-FistMarine
uh since you demanded one, here is your reply. thank you.
DeleteNo wad suggestions here, but I wanted to say congrats to you for hitting an awesome milestone. I wonder if anyone else can honestly say they've played as much of the community's content as you? Even so, looking at your list, there's STILL plenty of great stuff left. Keep it up, yo.
ReplyDeletethanks man! there is so much left to go, but I know I'll enjoy most of it.
DeleteCan't wait to read the results of your venture into Death-Destiny's territory ( and you could add No Chance to that wadlist btw :) ), as he's one of my favorite mappers.
ReplyDeleteAlso, congrats for hitting the 501 ( at the time of this writing ) review milestone. There's a lot of hidden gems that I would certainly have missed if I didn't regularly check this blog, so thanks for that. Keep going !
thanks, dude! i am sort of dreading Death-Destiny but i felt the same way about danne and ribbiks.
DeleteThanks for all your reviews, I admire your dedication and I think I visit this blog everyday because I'm getting too lazy to play new wads (easier to read about them, haha). :P
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
Also, Andy Badorak has some really cool single level gems floating around on idgames, most of which can be beaten in a 15-20 minute sitting if you ever need smaller maps between the bigger outputs. :P
Deletewaaaaay back when i started this blog, I made a folder with Andy Badorek's three Sp releases... along with one for Mark Klem and one for Malcolm Sailor. For some reason, I still haven't gotten around to any of those :p
Deletethanks again!
Azagthoth, Crimson Canyon and Rylayeh.
ReplyDeleteAlso, here's a bunch of cool things I found in obscure WAD threads:
The Invaders
Knee Deep in the Undead
Styx (by Bishop)
Can't Run Frm Evil [sic]
Sinister Intention
Sparta
Spire (by Foodles)
Baker's Dozen
Imperfection Has Its Charms
Data Center
Dark Resolution 2008
Hatoma Battles the Yomi Demons
In addition, The Spire by prower is a huge and very good level.
added, but the BIG list is now getting hid with a script because the more that gets requested, the more superfluous this list becomes. we are fast approaching a time when i might as well condense it all down to "every doom wad ever, kthx"
DeleteThanks for years of entertainment! Would like to see your take on Doom: A Megawad in 2 Weeks. It's a curiosity of a community project from the mid-2000s that tries to follow the Doom Bible story. Whether it succeeds in that regard is questionable, but it does at least offer oldschool style mps in a newish flair. Vegeta was (is?) a pretty good mapper.
ReplyDeleteadded... and i think lupinx asked me about it, too, a while ago
DeleteCame here to grab some links from you, and I didn't realize you had crossed such a massive milestone! Congrats—would love to know how many words you've racked up.
ReplyDeleteAs per suggestions, I'd like to add MAYhem2012 & 2013 to the pool, partly because I think each one is endearing (yet flawed) in its own way, but also because I'm always looking for more opinions on my work :P Plus you get to see the very first map Ribbiks submitted to DW!
Mayhem2012 and 2013 have been on the invisible list for a long time... it's just so freakin' huge. i would like to catch up with the DWMC backlog at some point.
DeleteAh, understood. One of the craziest things about our community is despite its meager size we produce dozens of hours of content each month, so it can be brutal to try and keep up with everything made and released. It's definitely a daunting task!
Deleteit is the MOST daunting of tasks, i mean, holy shit! "Doom is dead" my ass!
DeleteHere's an oddball pitch from the dark days of Skulltag: the Swan Fox series. It's most notable today as being one of the prime inspirations behind TerminusEst13's Demonsteele. They've pretty much disappeared off the face of the net (outside of an invasion episode off all things posted on the Zandro forums), but supposedly the author (who I believe is going by Angel Neko-X these days) will give you a copy if you ask nice enough.
ReplyDeletenot to disappoint, but that last part is more work than I'm interested in. not to say that I would totally turn my nose up at goofy Skulltag stuff, but i am short enough for time as it is rather than chasing people down.
DeleteReview "Pinochestein GL" pls.
ReplyDeleteadded
DeleteHopefully you get some time back in April...but whenever you do, No Sleep for the Dead deserves your attention.
ReplyDeleteAlso, DTWID The Lost Episodes. It is finally, FINALLY on /idgames!
ReplyDelete(Now only if we can beg Xaser & NaturalTventy for a finished No End in Sight, or Team UDTWID for well...UDTWID...)
i am sure that xaser is painfully aware of the desire for NEIS. i can only imagine the relief felt at finally booting out DTWID:LE... replaced of course by the fact that now people are probably going to complain about d2twid:le
DeleteThere's a new zrrion level, Sins of the Flesh, and a new episode by Jan Van der Veken, No Sleep for the Dead. Lainos has started another Urotsuki trilogy as well.
ReplyDeleteadded all dis stuff
Deleteand all of the stuff mentioned here is DONE
DeleteWhat about Doom 3: Mr Smiley Head Safari? That one is a huge cluster... something. But you get a chicken launcher.
ReplyDeletei'll file this one under "comedy options"
Deletethemes/TeamTNT/return : Paul Schmitz' three Artifact levels
ReplyDeleteThey are more than just copies, so they deserve special reviews IMO. I explained a little further in the Artifact review itself.
i was aware of the differences, but now these are officially on the torturous list
DeleteAlso this: http://doomedsda.us/wad2087.html
ReplyDeleteOnly working download is off DSDA, it hasn't been updated for like 3 1/2 years and probably will never see a 'true' release but it it's well worth going for anyways, IMO.
nah. not unless rf tells me himself that it's finito. I got so much out of phml before I finally knocked out phmlspd.
DeleteAre you willing to take up this one?
ReplyDeletehttps://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/66763-release-suitcase-of-gor-former-d2redux/
Download (working link): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/106557511/Suitcasev2.wad
It's not 'finished' per se, but the author makes it very clear in the thread that it never will be updated any further - and as a tester for the first eleven maps, I can safely say there isn't anything to hate about them, regardless of what the author says. Even other community members agree these maps don't deserve to just be lost forever (see the thread).
suitcase of gor has been sitting in my doom folder for like ever.
DeleteJapanese Community Project
ReplyDeleteMayhem 1500
both of these fine subjects are now on the BDL request list
Deleteand JPCP is now DONE
DeleteAncient Aliens - and hopefully not just on the 'I will get to it someday...' list
ReplyDeleteAlso, Somewhere in Time by Katamori
so here's the thing
Deletei don't just play recommended wads, and i don't play requests just because they are on an arbitrary list, especially not one that i am assuming has been curated by BDL (which is not an invitation to masquerade as someone else in an attempt to add more weight to your submissions). it's nice as a reminder, but given how many reccs you toss out, your askance is basically white noise. i am not a computer program that MUST be fed a request for ancient aliens before i even consider playing it. i have been eyeballing this fucker since i saw some pics in IRC after valiant came out last year. you better believe i'm going to play it, even if a thousand assholes spammed this post begging me not to.
Most of my requests are precisely that, things to consider getting to eventually (items for the very long list, per se), cases where I expect no more. But ultimately I agree there's no need that I specifically 'highlight' an obviously much higher caliber project in any way when posting requests, and thus I'll stop doing that.
Deleteincidentally, both of these megawads are DONE
DeleteNex Credo: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/m-o/nexcredo (what's there is finished, and the author clearly states he doesn't plan to make more, this wad is final)
ReplyDeleteExtinguished: http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/newstuff/extngshd.zip (a new Vordakk/Stormwalker single map)
Add Innocence X to the Innocence series of requests
nex credo and extinguished are DONE
DeleteThe Phobos Incursion: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/88644-doom-the-phobos-incursion-released/
ReplyDeleteAncient Aliens is on idgames \ o / Looking forward to the inevitable review!
ReplyDelete- AD_79
donezo and glad of it
DeleteI found this one because of your post asking for it in the request thread over at DW, and it's really interesting, so I'm curious to see your take on it: castheng by "James XIII"
ReplyDeleteEven for a mid 90s wad, this one doesn't fit into a box of what you would normally expect from a doom wad. It has a straight up no monsters puzzle map.
-7hm
castheng and the tomi rajala back to hell e1 are my two big embarassments atm, along with not having finished mayhem mansion. i would love to get to these pretty soon. its been a really rough year tho.
DeleteYou didn't miss NOVA II: New Dawn, didn't you?
ReplyDeletei didn't "miss" nova ii, but it has been a very bad year for me when it comes to playing doom, so i've spent just about all my free time trying to stay abreast of 2016, and i've still come up short
DeleteI would recommend Legacy of Heroes. It's also one of the few projects that uses the Eternal Doom textures.
ReplyDeletein fact, i have legher.zip in the folder with my zdoom .exe right now... along with like 40 other wads, lol
DeleteHellfire? This wad was very innovative at the time.
ReplyDeleteall three Hellfire sets are already in the main list... unless we aren't talking about Shadowman's Hellfire
DeleteCould you add Doom 2: Hell on Earth as well? :D
ReplyDeleteTNT: Revilution maybe? Is good to see some people make some love to TNT: Evilution in 2017.
ReplyDelete
