    1. i have never played multiplayer and do not intend to in the foreseeable future and wouldn't even know where to begin to give the multiplayer community the kind of reviews they deserve.

  7. Would love to see your take on Hellfire series, especially Reborn and Dreams. Shadowman is godlike when he does that sort of atmospheric maps with semi-realistic environments. Review of "5 Years" would be nice, since maps from that one are pretty similar to Hellfire ones in style.

    1. i definitely do want to do a full overview of shadowman's work at some point. added

  8. The one omission that seems unusual for your site is the (mostly) wonderful Whispers of Satan by Paul Corfiatis and Kristian Aro. I find the mapset just a teeeensy bit inconsistent, but some of the maps they've included in there are some of my absolute favorite of any megawad. For example, Corfiatis' Vulcana (map 25) or Aro's Halls of Cocytus (27). I think when they finally get to the hell levels, they nail the aesthetic of being evil, epic in scope, and brooding without degenerating to traps that require constant BFG spam. My two cents.

    1. it seems unusual at first but if you take a look at what I have reviewed thus far, i'm slowly building my way toward Whispers by playing through their entire back catalogue.

  9. Lots of quality Dooming to be had on that long, long list. You've certainly got your work cut out for you. Nevertheless, a handful of further suggestions:
*Jade Earth - Gigantic and highly polished subterranean techbase map, by Jodwin.
*Sacrifice in Blood - Very large/heavily exploratory monastery-type map. Very pronounced slant towards 'survival horror' action, i.e. not necessarily having resources to kill everything active at any one given time.
*The Corrupt Priest - Funky void map, sequel to Sacrifice in Blood. Taking backlash against the ammo balance in the first map on board, this one is much more run/gun oriented, with piles of ammo and lots of killin.' The two make an interesting pair, I think.
Whatever you end up playing next, here's to another fine year!

    1. Not trying to be rude or anything but you forgot to reply on my post. Once again congratulations for 500 reviews and can't wait for Doom 2 to be reviewed, as well as some popular megawads such as Plutonia 2, Scythe 2 and Wonderful Doom. :)

  12. No wad suggestions here, but I wanted to say congrats to you for hitting an awesome milestone. I wonder if anyone else can honestly say they've played as much of the community's content as you? Even so, looking at your list, there's STILL plenty of great stuff left. Keep it up, yo.

    1. thanks man! there is so much left to go, but I know I'll enjoy most of it.

  13. Can't wait to read the results of your venture into Death-Destiny's territory ( and you could add No Chance to that wadlist btw :) ), as he's one of my favorite mappers.

Also, congrats for hitting the 501 ( at the time of this writing ) review milestone. There's a lot of hidden gems that I would certainly have missed if I didn't regularly check this blog, so thanks for that. Keep going !

    1. Also, Andy Badorak has some really cool single level gems floating around on idgames, most of which can be beaten in a 15-20 minute sitting if you ever need smaller maps between the bigger outputs. :P

    2. waaaaay back when i started this blog, I made a folder with Andy Badorek's three Sp releases... along with one for Mark Klem and one for Malcolm Sailor. For some reason, I still haven't gotten around to any of those :p

      thanks again!

  15. Azagthoth, Crimson Canyon and Rylayeh.

Also, here's a bunch of cool things I found in obscure WAD threads:
    The Invaders
    Knee Deep in the Undead
    Styx (by Bishop)
    Can't Run Frm Evil [sic]
    Sinister Intention
    Sparta
    Spire (by Foodles)
    Baker's Dozen
    Imperfection Has Its Charms
    Data Center
    Dark Resolution 2008
    Hatoma Battles the Yomi Demons

In addition, The Spire by prower is a huge and very good level.

    1. added, but the BIG list is now getting hid with a script because the more that gets requested, the more superfluous this list becomes. we are fast approaching a time when i might as well condense it all down to "every doom wad ever, kthx"

  16. Thanks for years of entertainment! Would like to see your take on Doom: A Megawad in 2 Weeks. It's a curiosity of a community project from the mid-2000s that tries to follow the Doom Bible story. Whether it succeeds in that regard is questionable, but it does at least offer oldschool style mps in a newish flair. Vegeta was (is?) a pretty good mapper.

  17. Came here to grab some links from you, and I didn't realize you had crossed such a massive milestone! Congrats—would love to know how many words you've racked up.

As per suggestions, I'd like to add MAYhem2012 & 2013 to the pool, partly because I think each one is endearing (yet flawed) in its own way, but also because I'm always looking for more opinions on my work :P Plus you get to see the very first map Ribbiks submitted to DW!

    1. Mayhem2012 and 2013 have been on the invisible list for a long time... it's just so freakin' huge. i would like to catch up with the DWMC backlog at some point.

    2. Ah, understood. One of the craziest things about our community is despite its meager size we produce dozens of hours of content each month, so it can be brutal to try and keep up with everything made and released. It's definitely a daunting task!

      Delete
    3. it is the MOST daunting of tasks, i mean, holy shit! "Doom is dead" my ass!

  18. Here's an oddball pitch from the dark days of Skulltag: the Swan Fox series. It's most notable today as being one of the prime inspirations behind TerminusEst13's Demonsteele. They've pretty much disappeared off the face of the net (outside of an invasion episode off all things posted on the Zandro forums), but supposedly the author (who I believe is going by Angel Neko-X these days) will give you a copy if you ask nice enough.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. not to disappoint, but that last part is more work than I'm interested in. not to say that I would totally turn my nose up at goofy Skulltag stuff, but i am short enough for time as it is rather than chasing people down.

  21. Also, DTWID The Lost Episodes. It is finally, FINALLY on /idgames!

    Download (working link): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/106557511/Suitcasev2.wad

It's not 'finished' per se, but the author makes it very clear in the thread that it never will be updated any further - and as a tester for the first eleven maps, I can safely say there isn't anything to hate about them, regardless of what the author says. Even other community members agree these maps don't deserve to just be lost forever (see the thread).

    1. so here's the thing

i don't just play recommended wads, and i don't play requests just because they are on an arbitrary list, especially not one that i am assuming has been curated by BDL (which is not an invitation to masquerade as someone else in an attempt to add more weight to your submissions). it's nice as a reminder, but given how many reccs you toss out, your askance is basically white noise. i am not a computer program that MUST be fed a request for ancient aliens before i even consider playing it. i have been eyeballing this fucker since i saw some pics in IRC after valiant came out last year. you better believe i'm going to play it, even if a thousand assholes spammed this post begging me not to.

      Delete
    2. Most of my requests are precisely that, things to consider getting to eventually (items for the very long list, per se), cases where I expect no more. But ultimately I agree there's no need that I specifically 'highlight' an obviously much higher caliber project in any way when posting requests, and thus I'll stop doing that.

      Delete
    3. incidentally, both of these megawads are DONE

  29. Nex Credo: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/m-o/nexcredo (what's there is finished, and the author clearly states he doesn't plan to make more, this wad is final)

  32. I found this one because of your post asking for it in the request thread over at DW, and it's really interesting, so I'm curious to see your take on it: castheng by "James XIII"

Even for a mid 90s wad, this one doesn't fit into a box of what you would normally expect from a doom wad. It has a straight up no monsters puzzle map.
